Goals of the department
Oral Medicine has generally been defined as that discipline within dentistry which deals with the diagnosis and essentially non-surgical treatment of disease of the oral cavity and the oral manifestations of systemic disease. Oral medicine provides optimal health to all people through gathering relevant medical and dental information by scientific methods for diagnostic and medical management of oral diseases.

The Advanced Education Program in Oral Medicine and Radiology at Rama Dental College Hospital and Research Centre, Kanpur, is currently run by Dr. Vishal Mehrotra, Professor and Head of Department. This program is designed to provide extensive diagnostic and therapeutic skills to clinicians wishing to enhance their current skills in diagnosis and non-surgical treatment of oral and perioral diseases, and management of systemic diseases that have a significant impact on the health and function of the tissues of the mouth and adjacent structures.

The department of oral medicine and radiology was first established in the year 1996 where 100 UG students per year were admitted for the BDS course and in year 2006 MDS course was started. The department has full time highly qualified and dedicated team of staff to look after the smooth functioning of the UG and PG curriculum. The department is fully equipped with latest diagnostic instruments and a digitalized dental radiology. The department also runs a tobacco cessation clinic for imparting knowledge to the patients regarding the ill effects of tobacco/smoking and also the various diseases, premalignant lesions/conditions and oral cancer caused by it.

The clinical practice and/or teaching of Diagnostic and Therapeutic Oral Medicine is not restricted to the detection of disease processes, but also includes the treatment of oral lesions and perioral symptoms, dyscrasias and variations which are detected through appropriate diagnostic techniques. The various other areas been treated include Chronic orofacial pain states, Temporomandibular disorders, Stomatitis and mucosal lesions, Salivary and taste dysfunctions and Oral manifestations of systemic diseases and their treatment, such as cancer and its therapy (i.e., radiation, chemotherapy, bone marrow transplantation).

Service to society and health care professionals is a paramount objective of oral medicine. Oral medicine will prepare the professional to provide current and future patient care occasioned by the different mix of services demanded by the public and changing disease patterns. Oral medicine seeks to improve the quality of life of patients with medically related disorders of the oral and maxillofacial region.

Goals of the department
Prosthodontics is a discipline in dentistry pertaining to the restoration of oral function, comfort, appearance and health by restoring natural teeth and replacing missing teeth and contagious oral and maxillofacial tissues. There are six main branches of Prosthodontics

1. Fixed Prosthodontics
2. Removable Prosthodontics
3. Implants
4. Maxillofacial
5. Esthetics
6. TMJ and occlusion

The Department of Prosthodontics in Rama Dental College Hospital And Research centre undertakes the diagnosis, treatment & research in the discipline of Prosthodontics.

The Department of Prosthodontics in Rama Dental College Hospital And Research centre meets the need of evaluation at undergraduate and post graduate level, patient care and research in the field of Prosthodontics.

The Department currently offers graduate level training leading to

1. Bachelor of Dental surgery and Post graduate Training Program leading to Masters in Dentistry (M.D.S)
2. Department is equipped with the latest dental units with separate undergraduates and Post graduate clinical areas.
3. Separate lab, Plaster Lab, Ceramic Lab, Casting lab, and a seminar room equipped with latest Audio visual Aids.
4. The Post graduate section also has a dedicated IMPLANT THEATRE for implant cases.
5. The post graduate prepares students for the full range of Prosthodontics Rehabilitation procedures including specialty treatment for the maxillofacial Prosthodontics, Conventional and Basal Implantology.
6. The department maintains a large O.P.D for regular new patient inflow
7. The department also offers two years Diploma occurs in the department in Dental Mechanics.

The Department of Orthodontics offers Bachelor (B.D.S.), Masters (M.D.S.) and Ph.D. Degree Programs in Orthodontics. The vision of the Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics department is to prevent, intercept and correct skeletofacial anomalies and malocclusion so as to establish normal occlusion, function, esthetics and structural balance of the stomatognathic system.The department of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics is presently headed by Dr. Vinay Verma has started under graduate course in 1996 and post graduate course in 2006.

Deparment works under has optimal supervision by well-qualified staff. The department is equipped with all the necessary equipments required for Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopaedics procedures. Basic & specialized procedures are performed on college out-patients. Alongwith this there is encouragement and promotion of innovative research and publication.

Goals of the department
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a sphere of medicine and dentistry focused on the diagnosis, surgical treatments, management of diseases and disorders of face and jaws including different aspects of hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial region. The department came in to the existence with the establishment of Rama Dental College, Kanpur in 1996. post graduation course was started in 2006 contributing to the health care services aiming to improvise the physical and oral health of the patients.

Primary objective of the course is to provide proper clinical training in oral surgery; understanding complex clinical conditions and needs the treatment accordingly;so it is important to understand the independent and associated clinical management techniques.

The course is designed to meet the understanding and working requirements of oral surgery. Faculty provides in depth knowledge about the oral problems ranging from the removal of impacted teeth to fix the facial trauma. Students get proper training to perform clinical diagnosis, treatment and management of medical complexities and medical emergencies.

Department keeps conducting Conferences, Symposium and Workshops from time to time in which renowned faculty from national as well as international arena guides and educate pupils about the latest update on Maxillofacial Surgery and enhance their clinical skills.

Recently a one year Fellowship Program was started in June 2019 in Head and Neck Oncology having two seats. Currently there is an input of 100 Undergraduates and 5 Post Graduates per year. 45 Post Graduates have been granted Master of Dental Surgery in this department till date.

• Establishment of the Department in the year 1996.

• The department is having highly qualified, experienced, and dedicated teaching faculty.

Department is also equipped with an adequate infrastructure and state of the art equipments and instruments such as LASERS, Implant system, Microsurgical instruments, Intraoral camera, Iontophoresis unit , Electrocautery, Ultrasonic scalers, Fully automated sterilization equipments along with latest Regenerative materials consisting of different Bone grafts, Growth factors, Regenerative membranes, and Local drug delivery systems… etc to provide best possible periodontal (gum) treatment for the public.

• The student shall acquire the skill to perform dental scaling, diagnostic tests of periodontal diseases; to use the instruments for periodontal therapy and maintenance of the same.
• The student shall develop attitude to impart the preventive measures namely, the prevention of periodontal diseases and prevention of the progress of the disease.
• The student shall also develop an attitude to perform the treatment with full aseptic precautions; shall develop an attitude to prevent iatrogenic diseases; to conserve the tooth to the maximum possible time by maintaining periodontal health and to refer the patients who require specialist’s care.

The department is equipped with 56 dental chairs, 22 chairs in PG section and 34 chairs in UG section, with state of the art instruments, equipments and materials required for comprehensive dental care of the patients, giving special emphasis on basic & specialized treatments.

The department of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry is one of the prominent departments in Rama Dental College. The department is spread over a large area that includes Undergraduate section, Postgraduate section, Exodontia & Special child room, RVG unit room, Patient Dental Education Room, KidsZone, Audio-Visual Aids for behaviour management of the children, Preclinical laboratory and a clean sitting Patient waiting area.

This branch basically deals with specialized dental treatment for children primary teeth and young permanent teeth, comprising of restoration of diseased teeth, thus conserving remaining tooth structure and preserving the natural dentition and appropriate space for permanent teeth to erupt, as well as other treatment modalities like Endodontic management, Prosthetic management, Preventive & Interceptive Orthodontic treatments and many more. This branch also provides finest of dental treatment to mentally or/and physically disabled children also. Dental treatment under Conscious Sedation and General Anaesthesia is also performed for immature or special children. The subject of Paedodontics and Preventive Dentistry is taught in B.D.S Professional third year and fourth year.

The Department of Conservative dentistry &Endodontic is concerned with the preservation of the natural dentition. Conservative dentistry aims inthe treatment of diseases affecting the hard tissues of the teeth. These mainly include diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental caries, discolorations, and malformations, aesthetic corrections of the teeth thus enhancing the full form and functioning of the teeth.Endodontics deals with the diseases of the pulp and periapical tissues, apart from the root canal treatment of all the teeth, focusing on treatment of failed root canal treatment, endodontic surgeries.The Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontic has infrastructure and has expertise faculty to render their services handling a huge OPD thus achieving at maximum patient satisfaction. This provides opportunities for both the Undergraduates and Post graduates to handle challenging cases in their daily practice

The Department of Conservative dentistry & Endodonticscame to existence in 1996 with the establishment of Rama Dental College, Kanpur. The M.D.S. Course was introduced in 2006. The department is imparting training & teaching at the under-graduate and post graduate level with emphasis on clinical teaching, demonstrations and lectures in the subject. The advanced training programme is recognized by the Dental Council of India. Currently 100 undergraduate and 6 post graduate students in the department are admitted per year.Many students are enrolled under PhD programme offered in the department.

Forty Post-Graduate students have passed the specialty and are rendering their services throughout India. The department promotes research culture among faculty and students. Several articles related to the current areas of research such as genetics and regenerative endodontics are published in various national and international journals. Faculties are encouraged to participate in professional academic programmes.

The institution has sustainable good practices in research, consultancy and extension to achieve academic excellence. The department is engaged in either short term, fundamental or advanced, independent research activity focusing research projects in lasers,micro surgery, tissue engineering and regenerative endodontics.

Oral Pathology is the specialty of dentistry and discipline of pathology that deals with the nature, identification, and management of diseases affecting the oral and maxillofacial regions.

It is a science that investigates the causes, processes, and efforts of these diseases. The practice of oral pathology includes research and diagnosis of diseases using clinical, radiographic, microscopic, biochemical or other examinations.

Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the Dental Council of India that focuses on the diagnosis, Clinical management andInvestigation of diseasesthat affect the oral cavity and surrounding maxillofacial structures including but not limited to odontogenic, infectious, epithelial, salivary gland, bone and soft tissue pathologies.
