Skill Development Program Boosts Journalism Students' Practical Skills

The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Faculty of Professional Studies, successfully organized a Skill Development Program from 17th to 21st February 2025 for BJMC & MJMC students. The initiative aimed to provide students with hands-on learning experiences through various interactive activities designed to enhance their practical skills in Journalism, Communication, and Media. The program was spearheaded by Dean Dr. Poonam and coordinated by Mr. Abhishek Patel, Assistant Professor. It featured a diverse range of activities aimed at enhancing students' practical learning experiences.
Key activities included Guided Meditation & Journaling for mindfulness and balancing emotional well-being, Newsroom Simulation for real-time reporting experience, and Press Conference Role-Play to develop questioning techniques. The Headline Challenge and Live Reporting Game tested creativity and real-time reporting skills, while the PowerPoint Presentation on Current Issues encouraged research and knowledge enhancement. General Awareness MCQ Test evaluated students’ general awareness.
Students explored voice modulation and storytelling in the Radio Drama Challenge, and the Best RJ Challenge allowed them to showcase their radio presentation skills. The Photography Challenge honed visual storytelling abilities, while the Elevator Pitch Game improved concise communication. The Ad Campaign Challenge fostered creativity in advertising, and the Awareness Speech on Government Policies for Youth enhanced public speaking and policy awareness.
Engagement in digital media was promoted through the Instagram Reel Challenge, while the On-Stage Drama Challenge encouraged theatrical storytelling. Lastly, the Whisper Game added an interactive element to enhance communication and listening skills.
Overall, the program successfully bridged theoretical knowledge with practical application, equipping students with essential skills for Journalism and Mass Communication. The Skill Development Program was a resounding success, providing students with an opportunity to develop and refine their journalistic and communication skills in an engaging and interactive manner. The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication looks forward to organizing similar initiatives in the future to continue fostering skill-based learning among students.
