Rama University Celebrates International Women’s Week with a Thrilling Sports Event

Introduction
International Women's week (IWD), celebrated from March 4th to 9th, serves as a global movement dedicated to recognizing women’s contributions & advocating for gender equality in our society. It aims to address existing inequalities& promote women’s empowerment
To mark this important occasionThe Faculty of Nursing, Rama University, Uttar Pradesh, Kanpur, on day three organized one day friendly Sports & games on March7th, 2025, aimed at empowering womenby promoting equality, confidence& leadership skills through physical fitness & competitive spirit. The theme of this year is “Accelerate Action”. The event was organized to promote awareness of gender equality and to raise funds for various women’s empowerment initiatives. Sports provide an equal platform where women can complete based on skill & performance, not gender. Women in sports gain confidence, resilience & leadership skills, making them role model for others. It enhances health & well being & can the reason of economic growth & career opportunities for the women.
Inaugural ceremony
The inaugural ceremony of the Sports & Games at Rama University took place at the FET ground, marked by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting and the release of balloons. The event began with a warm welcome extended to all the distinguished women of Rama University, followed by the ribbon-cutting ceremony led by the esteemed guests, including:Prof. Dr. Vaishali Dhingra, Dean of the Faculty of Commerce & Management,Prof. Dr. Anita Yadav, Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture Sciences & Allied Industries, Prof. Dr. Poonam, Dean of the Faculty of Professional Studies,Prof. Dr. Jasmi Johnson, Principal of the Faculty of Nursing.Also present were other dignitaries and faculty members from various departments.Prof. Dr. Jasmi Manu delivered an inspiring speech, emphasizing the significance of women's empowerment in today's society. Ms. Prarthana Mahapatra, sports coordinator, introduced the events, setting the tone for the day's proceedings. Mrs. K. Jyothisree spoke on the importance of sports in women's lives, highlighting how it promotes physical and mental well-being. Prof. Dr. Jasmi Manu further elaborated on the positive impacts of sports on both physical and mental health, motivating students to actively participate in the games and make the day truly memorable.
KEY EVENTS
The list of sports included in the event was carefully curated to cater to diverse interests, ensuring that every participant could find an activity they enjoyed. By blending traditional and contemporary sports, the event fostered teamwork, leadership skills, and physical fitness, creating a dynamic atmosphere of engagement and unity.
Featured Sports and Games: The following sports were included in the inaugural Sports & Games event at Rama University
- Cricket:Cricket, a beloved and widely popular sport, was featured as one of the major activities. The matches were exciting and competitive, with both students and faculty forming teams to demonstrate their sporting skills. Cricket served as a symbol of teamwork and perseverance, with participants showcasing their collaborative spirit.
- Badminton:Badminton was a highlight of the event, offering participants the chance to display agility, quick reflexes, and coordination. Both singles and doubles formats were played, with spirited matches that encouraged friendly competition and athleticism.
- Kabaddi:Kabaddi, a traditional Indian sport, was another crowd favorite. Known for its intense physicality and teamwork, Kabaddi featured fast-paced, exciting matches where participants displayed not only strength and stamina but also strategy and coordination. This sport emphasized collaboration, quick decision-making, and determination.
- Kho-Kho:Kho-Kho, a popular sport among women, was also included in the event. The fast-moving nature of Kho-Kho required speed, teamwork, and communication, and it was enjoyed by both students and faculty members. The spirit of the game highlighted agility, teamwork, and leadership skills.
- Throw Ball:Throw Ball was chosen as a team sport that combines elements of volleyball and basketball. This inclusive sport encouraged participants to work together to score points, with a focus on coordination, communication, and leadership. The event saw high levels of enthusiasm and camaraderie.
- Hit the Pot:A fun and traditional game, Hit the Pot added an element of playful challenge to the event. In this game, participants were required to hit a pot placed at a distance using a ball, testing their precision, timing, and focus. The game fostered a sense of enjoyment and lighthearted competition.
- Skipping Rope:Skipping Rope, a simple yet effective activity, was also included as part of the event to promote cardiovascular fitness and coordination. This game provided participants with an opportunity to showcase their endurance, rhythm, and agility. It also encouraged individual fitness while fostering a sense of personal accomplishment.
Event Success and Participation: The Sports & Games event witnessed an overwhelming response from both students and faculty members. More than 500 students and 100 faculty members participated in various games, showcasing their athleticism, team spirit, and determination. The diversity in the games allowed participants from all backgrounds and skill levels to engage in the activities and contribute to the collective energy of the event.
The level of enthusiasm from the participants was palpable, as teams competed fiercely but fairly, demonstrating not just their sporting abilities but also their leadership and teamwork skills. The event truly embodied the spirit of International Women’s Week, with women leading the charge in fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone had the chance to shine.

The energy and enthusiasm that filled the event underscored the importance of continued action to create a more inclusive and equitable world.
