Rama University Celebrates Constitution Day with Legal Luminaries and Inspiring Discussions

Kanpur, November 26, 2024 — On the occasion of Constitution Day, the Faculty of Juridical Sciences at Rama University, Kanpur, hosted a distinguished event commemorating the adoption of the Indian Constitution. This annual celebration honours the monumental efforts of the Constitution’s framers, led by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and reflects on the foundational principles that guide India’s democratic ethos.
The event brought together a distinguished assembly of legal professionals, academic leaders, public administrators, and law students. The day was marked by enlightening discussions on the contemporary relevance of constitutional values and their role in shaping India's legal framework, governance, and inclusive development.
Event Proceedings: A Celebration of Constitutional Ideals
The program began with an inaugural address by Dr. Praveen Kumar Mall, Dean of the Faculty of Juridical Sciences. Dr. Mall highlighted the Constitution as a "living document" that bridges the aspirations of the past with the challenges of the present. The ceremonial lighting of the lamp followed, symbolizing knowledge and constitutional awareness.
Keynote Address by Prof. (Dr.) S.K. Bhatnagar
The highlight of the event was the keynote address by Chief Guest Prof. (Dr.) S.K. Bhatnagar, former Vice-Chancellor of Ram Manohar Lohia National Law University, Lucknow. Titled “Constitutional Ideals in Modern India,” Dr. Bhatnagar eloquently explored the philosophical foundations of the Constitution and the Preamble’s call for justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity.
Insights on Access to Justice
Ms. Shubhi Gupta, Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Kanpur Nagar, delivered an impassioned speech on “Access to Justice: A Constitutional Mandate.” Emphasizing Article 39A, she highlighted the importance of free legal aid and shared her experiences facilitating justice for marginalized communities.
The Constitution as a Living Document
Prof. (Dr.) Ajay Kumar Bhatt, Director of Amity Law School, Gurgaon, spoke on “The Indian Constitution: A Living Document.” Dr. Bhatt traced the Constitution's evolution through landmark judicial interpretations and underscored its adaptability in addressing emerging challenges.
Fiscal Governance and Constitutional Provisions
Retired IPS officer Mr. Prem Singh Bisht, now Special Monitor for the National Human Rights Commission, provided insights on “Constitutional Provisions and Fiscal Governance.” His address emphasized Articles 265 and 280, which govern taxation and fiscal federalism, aligning financial governance with constitutional principles.
The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks by Ms. Riddhi Tripathi, Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Juridical Sciences. She expressed gratitude to the dignitaries, faculty, and students for their active participation and contributions.
