Introduction:
World Water Day aims to raise awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.
Today, water is under extreme threat from a growing population, increasing demands of agriculture and industry, and the worsening impacts of climate change. As societies balance the demands on water resources, many people’s interests are not being taken into account.
Event Overview:
One day workshop on water conservation with the theme Save Our Glaciers was held on March 27, 2025, at the Seminar Hall, Faculty of Nursing The event was organized by WWF India in collaboration with the Faculty of Nursing, and aimed to raise awareness about the pressing issue of water conservation. The workshop was led by Mr. Umesh Chandra, Sr. Project Officer, WWF India, and Mr. Fahd Razi, Field Associate, WWF India. The event saw active participation from approximately 200 students and staff members.
Program Highlights:
- Introduction and Welcome Speech: The event commenced with a welcome speech by Mrs. S. Sumiya, the Head of the Department (HOD) of the Faculty of Nursing. Mrs. Sumiya expressed her gratitude to WWF India for conducting such an important session and emphasized the critical need for water conservation in the context of environmental sustainability. She also highlighted the importance of the students' involvement in such workshops to enhance their awareness of global water issues.
- Inaugural Address by WWF India Experts: The workshop began with an insightful session by Mr. Umesh Chandra, Sr. Project Officer, WWF India. Mr. Chandra provided an overview of World Water Day and the theme for the year, stressing on the urgency of preserving water resources for future generations. He elaborated on various water conservation techniques, such as rainwater harvesting, watershed management, and reducing water wastage. Mr. Chandra also discussed the role of communities, government, and organizations in ensuring sustainable water usage.
Following Mr. Chandra, Mr. Fahd Razi, Field Associate, WWF India, took the stage to discuss local-level water conservation efforts and shared successful case studies from different parts of the country. Mr. Razi also conducted an interactive session where students actively engaged with questions and shared their thoughts on practical solutions for water conservation.
- Interactive Session and Discussion: After the presentation, there was an interactive session where the students were encouraged to ask questions and share their views. The participants showed keen interest in learning about practical ways to conserve water both on a personal level and within their communities. Mr. Chandra and Mr. Razi provided valuable insights and answers to their queries. They also emphasized the importance of grassroots-level actions and how small changes in daily habits can lead to significant water savings.
- Importance of Water Conservation: The WWF India experts highlighted the alarming statistics related to global water scarcity and pollution. The workshop aimed to empower participants with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions and take action for water conservation. They spoke about the water-energy nexus, the impact of water conservation on climate change, and the need for policy reforms to address water scarcity.
- Closing Remarks: The workshop concluded with Dr. Jasmi Johnson, expressing her heartfelt gratitude to WWF India for their valuable contribution to raising awareness about water conservation. Dr. Johnson thanked Mr. Chandra and Mr. Razi for their informative and engaging session and acknowledged the participation of all attendees. She urged the students and staff to implement the knowledge gained from the workshop in their daily lives and advocate for water conservation in their respective communities during their community health Nursing visits and extension activities

The World Water Day workshop organized by WWF India was a highly informative and engaging event that successfully brought attention to the issue of water conservation. The presence of experts from WWF India, along with the active participation of students and faculty, made the workshop a valuable experience.
