National Newborn Week is observed annually from November 15 to 21 as a nationwide healthcare initiative aimed at raising awareness about the importance of neonatal care. This week highlights the contributions of healthcare professionals, policymakers, and communities in improving newborn health outcomes.
In 2024, the Department of Child Health Nursing, Faculty of Nursing, Rama University, Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, spearheaded the celebrations with the theme focusing on newborn rights and quality care. One of the key activities was an Extension Outreach Program held in Bhawanipur Village on November 18, 2024.
Program Highlights
Community Outreach through Role Play
the nursing students of B.Sc. Nursing Semester-VI led an interactive session with a role play, effectively conveying critical messages about:
- The importance of proper hygiene, feeding practices, and immunization for newborn care.
- The rights of every newborn to healthcare, nutrition, and emotional support.
- Educating villagers on their role in ensuring the health and safety of infants in their community.
- Practical methods for early newborn care.
The performance challenged common misconceptions, engaging the audience and promoting actionable knowledge.
Journey and Community Engagement
The event began with the team departing from Rama University at 10:30 a.m. and arriving in Bhawanipur by 11:00 a.m. Upon arrival, they were warmly welcomed by the village Pradhan, Mr. Ranjeet Pal, who extended his support.
The role play commenced at 11:30 a.m., captivating the audience, including parents, elders, and young community members. Their positive response underscored the importance of community-based education in enhancing neonatal care awareness.
Successful Conclusion
The session concluded at 12:00 p.m. to a round of applause. Attendees expressed gratitude for the valuable insights shared. As a gesture of goodwill, the team distributed stationery and small gifts to children, strengthening the bond between Rama University and the local community.
