Expert lecture on The Role of Nurse Navigators in Enhancing Cancer Care

On February 4, 2025, the Faculty of Nursing, Department of Fundamentals of Nursing, organized an insightful expert lecture to mark World Cancer Day 2025. The event, held at the Seminar Hall of the Faculty of Nursing, was centered around the theme “United by Unique” and focused on “The Role of Nurse Navigators in Enhancing Cancer Care”. The aim of the event was to raise awareness about the critical role nurse navigators play in improving the quality of care for cancer patients and to educate nursing students about their importance in the healthcare system.
The program began with a traditional lamp lighting ceremony, a symbol of enlightenment and the commencement of the day’s proceedings. The chief guest, Dr. Virendra Singh Chaudhary, Principal of Sri Vidyawati College of Nursing, Jhansi, delivered the keynote address. Dr. Chaudhary spoke extensively about the evolving role of nurse navigators in oncology care. He emphasized that nurse navigators are essential in guiding patients through their cancer treatment journey, providing support at each step, and ensuring that patients are well-informed and emotionally supported throughout the process. His lecture also touched upon the various challenges faced by nurse navigators and the skills needed to successfully navigate these challenges while maintaining patient-centered care.
The event was convened by Dr. Jasmi Johnson, who played an instrumental role in organizing the program and ensuring that everything ran smoothly. Mrs. S. Sumiya, the moderator, facilitated the session, ensuring that discussions were engaging and that the students had an opportunity to interact with the experts. The session fostered an atmosphere of active learning, with students posing thoughtful questions to Dr. Chaudhary regarding the practical aspects of the role of nurse navigators, including their responsibilities in coordinating care and their impact on patient outcomes.
After the interactive Q&A session, feedback was collected from the students to gauge the effectiveness of the event. The responses were overwhelmingly positive, with students expressing a greater understanding and appreciation of the crucial role that nurse navigators play in the oncology care continuum. A total of 200 students participated in the event, all of whom were actively engaged throughout the proceedings.
The program concluded with a valedictory ceremony, where the national anthem was sung in unison, symbolizing unity and respect for the cause. The event was formally adjourned with a vote of thanks by Dr. Jasmi Johnson, who expressed gratitude to the chief guest, the organizing team, faculty members, and the students for their participation and support in making the event a success.
This expert lecture served as an invaluable opportunity for the nursing students to learn from experts in the field of oncology nursing. It also helped to raise awareness about cancer care and the pivotal role of nurse navigators in ensuring that patients receive the comprehensive care they need. The event was a resounding success and highlighted the importance of continued education and collaboration in improving cancer care outcomes.The event reinforced the Faculty of Nursing’s commitment to excellence in education and awareness initiatives.
