World No Tobacco Day 2016

World No Tobacco Day is observed on 31st May all over the world every year to educate the public about the Ill effects of Tobacco Use.
As a part of “ Word No Tobacco Day “ celebrations, Rama University’s Faculty of Dental Sciences, Kanpur organized a Free Oral Cancer Screening and Awareness Camp under the combined auspices of Dept. of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Pathology, Oral Medicine and Public Health Dentistry on 31st May 2016 .
Around 200 patients were educated regarding Ill effects of tobacco use. Later the patients were subjected for through oral cancer screening by inspection and investigation by applying toluidine blue as vital stain, making exfoliative cytology smears by the PG students. Patients with tobacco habits were also subjected to spirometry to check for lung volume in smokers and pulse oxymetry for oxygen tension in blood of regular tobacco user. Around 30% of patients were reporting for oral cancer camp and diagnosed with potentially malignant disorders such as oral submucous fibrosis and Leukoplakia.
The camp was successfully organized under the Guidance of Dr. Major Gen. G.K. Thapliyal, HOD Dept. of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and Dr. Gayatri Ramesh, HOD Dept. of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Pathology.
Poster competition on “Ill Effect of Tobacco Use” was organized by dept. of Oral Medicine and the best posters were awarded with certificates & appreciation.
Sr. Doctors from Public Health dentistry, Senior Lecturer, Interns and Postgraduates spread awareness talk to patients on the importance of dental health and dental hygiene measures. Free medicines, awareness material and spread the strong message of quitting tobacco distribution for patients was done during the camp.
The camp was conducted in coordination with Mr. Subramanyam, Liason Officer.
